The Editorial Office welcomes a steady revision process
of all chapters which can also include the submission of new chapters.
We, however, strongly encourage prospective authors to contact the
Editorial Office before initiating any such effort since a specific
chapter revision, or the initiation of a new topic, may already have
been assigned. The Editorial Office can be reached electronically at tweidner@sbcglobal.net.
If prospective authors are not already known to the Editorial Office, they will be asked to
submit a curriculum vitae for review, together with a short written proposal that will explain
which chapter(s) they wish to revise/write and what their expertise in the respective medical
area(s) is. The acceptance of any proposal is at the sole discretion of the Editor-in-Chief.
Once a proposal has been accepted, the author will receive detailed instructions as to the
desired length of the manuscript and in regards to other chapter-specific requirements.
FORMAT
Authors are advised that each chapter has to follow a newly devised standard format. Each
revised (or new) chapter will start with a brief abstract of not more than 750 words. This
abstract is to follow the chapter outline, which starts with an untitled introductory section
and is, in sequence, followed by titled sections on pathophysiology of the described condition,
effects (of the medical condition) on pregnancy, effects (of pregnancy) on the medical condition,
and treatments. The authors are strongly encouraged to point out in all sections, where
applicable, the specific differences in diagnoses and treatments between the pregnant and
non-pregnant state. Moreover, special attention should be placed on the two-patient concept;
i.e. the fact that maternal activities and maternal treatments almost invariably also affect
the fetus.
WORK PROCESS
In case of a chapter revision, the assigned author, if he/she so desires, will be given
electronic access to the existing chapter which may serves as basis for revisions and or
additions. If the original chapter was written by different authors, then the revised
submission must include at the bottom of the abstract a credit line that states: “This
manuscript was revised based on an original book chapter, authored for a prior edition
by …………………”
Manuscript submissions to the Editorial Office are to be made in electronic format, with
details being described in the instructions the authors will receive after acceptance of
their outline. All submitted manuscripts will undergo peer review and authors, therefore,
can expect requests for revisions. In order to establish a quick revision cycle for this
text, we expect not more than three months turn around between acceptance of outline and
submission of a manuscript. If this process is delayed, the Editor-in-Chief reserves the
right to reassign the chapter revision.
ELECTRONIC COMMUNITY
After publication, all chapters will be subject to review by an electronic community.
Indeed, we encourage all authors to invite participation by colleagues in the discourse over
their chapters. If authors wish to revise their chapters further, in response to comments from
the community, they will be given such opportunities at three and 12 months after their
manuscript was originally posted. Any such revisions will, however, have to undergo repeated
peer review, if judged significant enough by the Editor-in-Chief. Any errors discovered in the
text will be corrected immediately when brought to the attention of the Editorial Office.
COPYRIGHT AND AUTHOR PAYMENTS
By submitting a manuscript for publication to the Editorial Office, the authors transfer the
copyright ownership for their manuscripts irrevocably to the publisher, TM-Publishing. In return,
they will receive, at no cost, for two years an unlimited subscription to the full on-line
textbook and five percent of access revenues generated by the publisher from exclusive access
to their respective chapters. The publisher will make payments to authors once a year.
DISCLAIMER
Even though every possible effort is made through the editorial review process to avoid
errors in the materials posted, authors, Editor-in-Chief and publisher cannot guarantee the
absence of all errors. Clinical judgments and treatment decisions should, therefore, never
exclusively be based on the information provided in this textbook and should, indeed, be
collaborated by other sources. This especially applies to medication names and dosages,
which should always be confirmed by comparing to authoritative pharmacological sources
